Belgravia Area Guide

Belgravia Area Guide

One of London's most exclusive locations, Belgravia lies to the south of Knightsbridge, from which it differs by being much less busy. With fewer shops, fewer visitors and less traffic, it is a more relaxed residential area. There are wide avenues with many elegant residences, including cream-painted Georgian (1840s) town houses, often with smaller ‘mews’ properties behind, where the nobility of 19th century England kept their horses and carriages and where the domestic staff lived. These mews houses make ideal London homes for people who may also have a larger house in the English countryside, or abroad.

A mixture of these houses and spacious apartments are set around some of the garden squares, such as Eaton Square and Chester Square. Belgrave Square is well-known for its many embassy buildings, but there are some extravagant private dwellings there, as well. Elizabeth Street (to the south), Motcomb Street (to the north) and Pimlico Road (to the west) all provide boutique-style shopping, offering a wide range of useful and interesting goods, with vibrant cafes, bars and restaurants alongside.
