The town has a number of historic sites and buildings, in particular the Priory Gardens - all the buildings in the northern part of the town are within The Priory conservation area and it’s outbuilding and walks are grade II listed on the English heritage’s register of park gardens. One of the most famous historical attractions in the borough is Charles Darwin’s home - Down House. Here you can explore Darwin’s home and see where he worked, absorbing the calm and peaceful atmosphere that so inspired him.
For the more active there are a wide selection of top class sports and leisure facilities, including the Walnuts sports centre which offers swimming, badminton and squash plus many more activities. All this within a few miles from the M25(J4), M20 and M2, within easy reach of Gatwick, Heathrow, Stanstead and Biggin Hill airports and just an hours drive from the Channel tunnel.
Orpington College is situated in the heart of the town centre offering GCSE’s, A’levels & vocational qualifications to over 5,000 students of varying age groups. Additionally, there are a number of highly regarded state, private and selective schools within a five mile radius, including St Olaves, Newstead Wood, Darrick Wood, The Priory and Bullers Wood.
